Working with a finite reserve of authentic Gwynfynydd Welsh gold, our master goldsmiths handcraft every creation, turning a rare piece of British history into an heirloom for generations to come.
The Gwynfynydd Gold Mine
Discovery & The 19th Century Gold Rush
Gold was first discovered in the Dolgellau area in the 1850s, sparking a passionate mining rush. The initial gold at Gwynfynydd was found in 1863, though it was not until 1887 that the mine was developed commercially.
By 1888, two hundred people were employed at the site. Miners worked deep underground by candlelight, driving horizontal tunnels (adits) into the mountainside. Unlike other mines in the area with shallow deposits, Gwynfynydd gold was extracted from massive quartz veins deep within the earth, powered entirely by water wheels and turbines.
A Preserved Legacy
To this day, the historic Gwynfynydd mine remains closed. Restrictive health and safety regulations, along with strict environmental legislation protecting the nearby River Mawddach, mean this rare gold can no longer be extracted.
We are fortunate to have a reserve of authentic, extraordinarily scarce, Gwynfynydd Welsh gold. Every single piece in our collection is individually hand-crafted in our studio by master goldsmiths.
A Royal Heritage
A Century of Royal Tradition
The British Royal Family’s tradition of choosing Welsh gold for their wedding bands dates back over a century, beginning with the marriage of the future King George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923.
The 1986 Birthday Gift
In 1986, Queen Elizabeth II was presented with a kilogram of Gwynfynydd Welsh gold on her 60th birthday. This precious gift was subsequently used to craft wedding bands for generations of royalty including Princess Diana, King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Catherine Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle.
With this royal stock believed to be almost exhausted, Gwynfynydd gold has become some of the most coveted and valuable gold in the world.
